Climate Change or El Nino

It is hard to believe that The Crew got out river surfing on January 10th. This is pretty unheard of for this area. The river is usually frozen by now with sub zero air temperaturs. However, this winter has been a bit different.

After a few days with temeratures between -10 and -20 celsius we experienced spring-like weather for two days. With temeratures climbing up to plus 9 the opportunity to plunge back in the water was available.

Usually this time of year The Crew is busy snowboarding the local slopes, or bundled up inside a local bar because it is simply too cold to even go outside. However, this El Nino winter we are experiencing is something else.

As exciting as it was to be surfing this late into winter, it also concerns us. Not only has it meant a very late start to our snowboarding season, with lousy conditions, unpredictable weather and simply not alot of terrain open; it also really opens ones eyes to the harmful affects of climate change.

With no suprise, El Nino events bring milder winters. However, climate change is increasing the intensity of these natural events casuing unprecidented temperatures to higher latituted. It is shocking that it has taken this long for people to understand the realness of climate change. This winter we are truly feeling and seeing the results of climate change and this extreme El Nino Winter.
